U.K.Online Gambling Signs on to Senet Group

Advertizing for various products available only on the internet such as online gambling is an essential element for success. Advertizing in the online gambling sector was deregulated six years ago and the increase in the number of ads related to gambling has increased dramatically since then. According to Ofcom research published in November of last year gambling commercials on English TV increased from 234,000 a year to nearly 1.4 million annually between 2007 and 2012. It was also pointed out that under aged viewers sixteen and younger were exposed to an average of 211 ads each. The times have changed for online gambling operators who realize that standards have to follow what the public considers acceptable.

The Senet Group has been formed as an independent body to promote responsible gambling standards and ensure that the marketing of gambling is socially responsible. They have invited all gambling operators that have high standards in their commitment to responsible gambling to join. The group is embarking on the recruitment of an independent Standards Commissioner to chair the Group and on the development of a major advertising campaign in 2015 to educate people about responsible gambling.

William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral and Paddy Power have committed to a voluntary ban on advertising sign-up offers such as free bets and free money on TV before 9pm, keeping in mind children and young people watching and the withdrawal of all advertising of gaming machines in betting shop windows, also they will be dedicating 20% of shop window advertising to responsible gambling messages. The Senet Group, due to be fully up-and-running January 2015, will carry out bespoke independent test purchasing to ensure that the operators deliver on the commitments announced and other codes of practice aimed at protecting the vulnerable. It will be able to “name and shame” or impose fines on operators in breach.

CEO of William Hill, James Henderson commented, “The launch of the Senet Group sets a benchmark by which we and the betting industry can be judged.”
