Online Payments Provider Global Acquires Realex

A reliable payment solution business is essential for the smooth operation of the online gambling industry. Payment options are plentiful for the online gambler with many operators and web locations offering superb and fast service.

Dublin headquartered Realex Payments was founded in 2000 by award winning entrepreneur Colm Lyon and has grown into one of Europe’s largest online payment gateways. The company provides a range of payment processing services for businesses selling online and processing payments valued in excess of €28 billion per year on behalf of 12,500 retailers throughout Europe. . In 2012 Realex signed a significant deal with Global Payments providing a managed online payments service for all their ecommerce retailers.

Now Global Payments has acquired the Realex Payments firm in an effort to expand on its e commerce business in the European market. The deal is valued at €115 million ($126.9 million) and will be funded by available liquidity from Global.

Chief Executive Officer for Global Payments, Jeff Sloan, commented on the arrangement, “Realex Payments represents a strategic investment to expand our international omni-channel technology offerings, enhancing our go-to-market strategy in one of our largest regions with industry leading value-added products and services.” Sloan continued,  “We are excited to further invest in our European businesses, continue to leverage our multinational footprint and accelerate our growth opportunities at a favourable time in Europe.”

Colm Lyon, chief executive officer of Realex Payments, also commented on the deal,  “We are thrilled to be joining the Global Payments team. “The combination of Global Payments’ multinational acquiring expertise with Realex Payments' technologies and employees will position us well for global growth and expansion.”

Global Payments, is a Fortune 1000 company which offers processing solutions for credit and debit cards, business-to-business purchasing cards, gift cards, electronic check conversion and check guarantee, verification and recovery including electronic check services, as well as terminal management.
