New Golf and Gambling Film Released in the USA

Gambling is entertainment for many people around the world so it goes without saying that films about gambling are also going to be entertaining for many. A recent production directed and written by Terry Jastrow, called "The Squeeze" tells the story of a humble young man with uncommon skills from a small southern town who gets caught up in high stakes golf matches between big-time gamblers until the game becomes life and death.

Golf is a competitive sport especially in the USA that seems dominated by younger players so this film is on target when it comes to the demographics. The gambling aspect adds a sinister element to the film giving it an interesting edge not uncommon in American film depictions of gambling.

The lure of quick riches is also common when the main character Augie Baccas played by Jeremy Sumpter who is a young golfer of exceptional skill is taken by a professional gambler called Riverboat played by Chris McDonald. The story proceeds with the young man being talked into competing in matches which involve high stakes wagering. The golf matches are the venue for the high stakes gambling matches that moves through the South and lands in Las Vegas.  This film is based on a true story which adds another aspect to the movie.

With at least twenty million American’s playing golf, the professional level play definitely attracts millions of dollars in wagers. Ironically it is still illegal to place bets whether online or off on sports such as golf in most of the USA. The offshore online books are always busy during the US Open and the Masters Golf tournaments as well as others.  This movie hasn’t furthered the cause of legalizing sports betting in America by showing the dramatic and sometimes tragic side of gambling on golf. Like most things made in Hollywood however a grain or two of salt is required when taking in a movie like this one.
