War on Online Gambling Continues in Malaysia

The constitution of Malaysia declares Islam the state religion while allowing freedom of religion for non-Muslims is part of the issue the government has with online gambling operators. This Asian country has a population of around 31 million and evidence of modern human habitation in Malaysia dates back 40,000 years.

Malaysia's economy in 2014–2015 was one of the most competitive in Asia, ranking 6th in Asia and 20th in the world, higher than countries like Australia, France and South Korea. Although online gambling is illegal in Malaysia terrestrial forms of gaming are available but for the 61 percent Muslim population it is restricted for religious reasons.
Online gambling in Malaysia is prohibited by law. The government does not offer licenses to internet gambling sites in the country, and the administration also takes measures to ensure that Malaysian players do not use foreign internet gambling sites. Internet cafés owners for example can be prosecuted if they allow customers to access online gambling websites although this is relatively rare. Malaysian banks are prohibited from authorizing  transfers related to online gambling websites but there are still  a number of banking methods open to Malaysian players who want to gamble online. Some of the online gambling websites that are hosted in other countries even offer their services in the local language of Malay.

A recent report by the Sun Daily Malaysian news source revealed that illegal 4D operators a fixed odds lottery were taking profits from licensed operators, the three main 4D providers  Sports Toto, Magnum 4D and Da Ma Cai. The report also concluded the government of the country was also losing about $767.6 million USD annually in lost tax revenue. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has said there is a need for a change in the gambling laws which were introduced before the use of the internet for wagering purposes.
