Online Gambling Firm Unibet To Sponsor Pro Darts

Darts is a form of throwing game in which small missiles are thrown at a circular dartboard fixed to a wall. It sounds simple enough but this game has many variations and is a very competitive sport in places all around the world. There is speculation that the game originated among soldiers throwing short arrows at the bottom of a cask or at the bottom of trunks of trees. The game is said to have been officially created around the last decade of the nineteenth century in the United Kingdom. Of the two professional organisations, the British Darts Organisation (BDO), founded 1973, is the older. Its tournaments are often shown on the BBC in the UK.

In 1992 a breakaway organisation was formed, initially known as the World Darts Council but it is now known as the Professional Darts Corporation. The PDC tournaments have a large following and the BBC will be picking up the inaugural PDC Champions League of Darts set to begin on 24th September 2016, they will no longer be broadcasting the BDO World Championship.

Now online gambling operator Unibet has agreed to a deal to become title sponsor of this year’s inaugural edition of the Professional Darts Corporation’s (PDC) Champions League. The new eight-person tournament will now be known as the Unibet Champions League. The tournament will commence at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales, this September 24-25, 2016 with the competition  featuring  the eight players ranked highest by the PDC after the World Matchplay event in July.

The eight players will be drawn into two groups and the top two from each group will go on to compete in the semi-finals and final.

Unibet’s UK marketing manager Chris Watson commented on the agreement, “The Unibet Champions League is going to be a real showpiece event this year for the PDC, and the extensive BBC coverage will allow Unibet to reach a large audience of passionate sports fans with our brand,”
