Online eSports Gambling Now Available From Loto-Quebec

The Quebec government’s approach to online gambling seems to be one that is all about the profit. A recent article on the web has revealed that Loto-Quebec has introduced a new eSports category utilizing its Mise-o-jeu sports betting offering.

The government run online gambling monopoly has been trying to stop other web locations for online gambling services from being accessed by Quebec punters. The method the government has recently legislated is the censoring of offshore gambling sites available to citizens of the province. The online gambling site Espacejeux.com is now offering 13 different betting markets on the StarCraft II World Championship Series (WCS) Summer Circuit Championship taking place in Montreal for the first time.

The DreamHack Open is taking place this weekend August 12th to 14th in Montreal. Loto-Quebec has partnered with DreamHack and is sponsoring the Loto Quebec Indie Zone, offering free space to twelve local independent game studios to showcase their unique products. About 10 thousand eSports fans are expected to attend the DreamHack event in Montreal.

The concept of blocking is meant to protect online gambling consumers from unscrupulous operators and also to keep minors from getting involved in online betting.  The IP blocking plan was created to boost Loto-Quebec’s annual revenue by an estimated CND $27m.but the plan is already the subject of legal challenges. Quebec is not the first provincial enterprise to offer eSports betting. British Columbia’s provincial online gambling monopoly, Playnow.com, also offers eSports betting on StarCraft II, Dota 2 and the League of Legends, among other markets.

Louis Beaudet, Loto-Quebec’s director of sports and entertainment betting commented that the demand for eSports betting was expanding and Loto-Quebec was “filling the gap by offering a secure and honest environment for placing bets.”

Loto-Quebec is also offering markets on Friday’s Dota 2 International 2016 contest. Beaudet said the site would “continue to track interest in this type of betting over the coming months.”
