Australia Online Sports Gambling Ads Banned On TV

In November of 2016 the Australian government introduced the new Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill 2016 that enabled the Australian Communications and Media Authority to issue civil penalties. Operators that take bets from punters in Australia without a local licence will be deemed to have broken the law and face heavy fines. Alan Tudge, Human Services Minister for Australia said at the time, “We expect online wagering providers to meet community expectations; the tougher laws will seriously disrupt illegal offshore providers from acting unscrupulously or targeting vulnerable Australians.”

Now a few months later the efforts of the government to control online gambling operators have been extended to new laws that will ban all forms of gambling advertising on television during live sports events.Communications Minister Mitch Fifeld is to put the proposal to the cabinet in the near future that would affect all betting advertisements from the start to finish of televised sporting events. The proposition has attracted criticism from a number of sports organizations which maintain the ban could have a negative impact on funding for sports.

The executive director of the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports, Malcolm Speed, commented,  “We don’t support a ban on sports betting advertising, on the basis that it is likely to impact on media rights deals or the value of media rights, which is the sports’ greatest asset.

“We operate in a highly-regulated system, where there are limits on placement of sports betting advertising.

“The sports have co-operated with broadcasters and the government to ban live odds during matches; so any restriction or prohibition will inevitably result in lowering investment in community and participation programs, and grassroots development.”

Anti gambling proponent Senator Xenophon told Fairfax Media back in March of 2017, “The saturation of gambling advertising during sporting broadcasts is a major community issue that must be a part of negotiations with the government over media reform.”
