KING OF SPAM SETTLES FOR $ 7 MILLION
Hotmail litigation nets cash compensation for Microsoft
A $40 million U.S. civil action lodged by Microsoft Hotmail against spam company chief Scott Richter earlier this year has recently been finalised with a $7 million settlement.
Richter's company, OptinRealBig, grossed $19.6 million last year but the company spent over $500 000 on lawyers in just the first three months of 2005 according to American media reports.
In addition to settling the lawsuit with Microsoft for $7 million, Richter has reportedly also agreed to withdraw the bankruptcy filings he'd made for himself and his company - bankruptcies it is alleged were intended solely to consolidate lawsuits and reorganise the company so it could keep on spamming.
This settlement, along with Richter's removal from the ROKSO (Registry of Known Spam Operations) list, makes it look like he may have finally chosen legitimacy.
