MASSACHUSETTS LEGISLATOR GOES AFTER ONLINE GAMBLING
"It's running
rampant...."
Media reports from New England this week indicate that
online gambling faces another politician intent on stopping the industry's continuing
expansion in order to protect traditional horse racing.
Massachusetts
State Representative David Flynn (D-Bridgewater) says he wants to ban online gambling,
but according to state Attorney General Tom Reilly there is no state law banning
online gambling and the issue remains a gray area.
"It's running
rampant right now and it's hurting us,'' said Flynn, revealing that he plans to
seek an outright ban on online betting in the Bay State.
"I think
we've been very lax as far as protecting this (horse racing) industry that employs
more than 6,000 people. We're really promoting the death knell for racing and
that's sad.''
Flynn was speaking in response to the fact that online
race books had taken away a substantial amount of business from the state tracks
with their 10 percent to 15 percent rebate programs, and the convenience of betting
online.
