UK betting group suffers GBP 1 million loss
Weak sportsbook margins cancelled out record performances in online casino and poker operations in the current six monthly reporting period, says British gambling group Blue Square, the online subsidiary of the Rank Group. The result was a GBP 1 million loss despite strong growth from the online casino and poker operations.
"Sportsbook margins continued to be weak throughout the first half contributing to an operating loss of GBP 1 million" a Blue Square spokesman said. "Gross win numbers showed zero growth at GBP 10.8 million compared to the same period last year, despite growth of 43 percent.
The Blue Square sportsbook now has 156,000 active customers, and saw significantly higher bet volumes with revenues up to GBP 250.9 million. Like Paddy Power, revenues from non-sportsbook activities exceeded those from the sportsbook for the first time.
