NINE.COM JOINS THE KATRINA AID EFFORT

President Bob Evans drives in with truckloads of relief

Another online gambling company has joined the effort to provide aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina (see earlier Online-Casinos.com and InfoPowa reports)

The president of the Nine.com gambling group, Bob Evans flew into Houston over the weekend to join a team delivering several large truckloads of relief items such as nutrition bars, bottled water, blankets, pampers, flashlights and other necessities that the company had bought and driven from Dallas, Texas. The supplies were taken to the Astrodome and other refugee staging areas, where Nine.com staff helped distribute same personally.

Publicity was the last thing on Evans's mind, and the gambling exec said that it was "...just a great feeling to simply give anything you can, drive it right into the fray, roll up your sleeves and pitch in as the best way for Nine.com to make an immediate impact."

The company also plans to run a celebrity poker tournament to raise money for the victims of Katrina.

Nine.com is not the only online gaming company trying to help; Bodog, PokerStars, Vegas Partners Lounge and Absolute Poker companies all mounted generous fund-raising efforts within hours of the disaster.

777rock.com, a sportsbook based in San José, has also been active among the several of private organisations in Costa Rica that are donating to relief efforts. The firm gave $20,000 to officials in New Orleans and a Hummer loaded with supplies will join a 20-truck convoy headed towards emergency shelters in New Orleans where the items will go to whomever needs them, said Marshall Williams, a spokesman for 777rock.com.

And over at Olympic sportsbook the owners and management are matching player donations to raise $100,000 for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Olympic will match donations from its online sportsbook players through Sept. 15 in an effort to send $100,000 for Katrina assistance.
