MORE ONLINE GAMBLING RAIDS IN SOUTH AFRICA
Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board shows its teeth again
Eastern Cape province online gambling operators are facing arguably the toughest anti-online gambling blitz seen in South Africa from a remarkably zealous Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board (see previous Online-Casinos.com & InfoPowa reports)
This week the Board instigated a raid by the national police organised crime unit in Port Elizabeth. Accompanied by two officials from Board, the raid took place on a venue at Greenacres which they suspected to be an illegal casino.
25 computers and other gambling equipment, worth about Rands 100 000, were confiscated during the midday swoop.
Police spokesman Superintendent Johann van Greunen said the police unit acted on information received about illegal gambling allegedly taking place at the Maxi Net premises in Ring Road. A search warrant was obtained and the premises of Maxi Net were raided after being under police surveillance for some time.
"It was established that illegal gambling was conducted on a large scale and on a daily basis" van Greunen reported. The computers were being used for online gambling despite warnings by the gambling board to online gamblers about the illegality of this type of gambling.
The owner was not arrested and the case docket would be taken to the prosecutors after completion of the investigation, Van Greunen said.
