The Gazette newspaper in Quebec Canada has reported that the Quebec government in Canada may be offering a safe and secure online poker website by next year. The Kahnawake Gaming Commission. which is part of the Mohawk Nation within the Quebec province has over two hundred 200 "permit holders" that offer online gambling. Chairman of the Kahnawake Gaming Commission Dean Montour was reported as saying he welcomed the news that the Quebec government was getting involved in the industry. He said, "The fact that Quebec is now entering the online gaming business in partnership with the Atlantic provinces and British Columbia is an indication that the industry is thriving and is gaining wider acceptance," He commented, "For over 10 years, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission has had a positive working relationship with online gaming regulators throughout the world and looks forward to sharing its knowledge and experience with the Régie des alcools des courses et des jeux." Cousineau gave some opinion on the decision for the partnership stating, It will be a socially responsible alternative to the 2,000 illegal gaming sites, virtually all foreign, now available to Quebecers and patronized by growing numbers of internet players. Adding that the growth of unsupervised online gaming "has negative consequences for players and the general population," which includes no controls for problem gamblers or proper age verification. Cousineau in a speech said that Canadians bet an estimated $675 million online in 2008 and the total is expected to top $1 billion in 2012. Cousineau said the gaming corporations of other countries already have moved to provide secure sites for online wagering, including Finland, Norway and Sweden. The Quebec government profited $1.4 billion from Loto-Quebec’s revenue of $3.9 billion. It seems like the governments in the provinces of Canada are starting to see regulation is good for everyone.
