Online gambling from various sectors of the demographic has been rising but none is more revealing than the fact that more than half of the gambling population now consists of women. It has been steady at a third of participants for a long time, but now has come up to the same as men for punting proclivity.
A recent article in the U.K.’s Daily Mail News, explains that this result also excludes those women who play the National Lottery every week. These statistical results may take into considerstion the increased availablity women have to the net. Politicians are making this fact out to be something sinister calling the news a ’warning’ from experts that parliamentarians in the U.K. should take heed of. This surge over the past ten years has taken a whole decade to manifest itself; curiously online gambling has surged too.
The warning continues to say that one problem gambling clinic in London is overflowing with mothers addicted to scratch cards, slot machines, or online gambling, they are even offering day care for the kids so Mums can get some help. The Commons culture select committee, is listening to the submissions made by the National Centre for Social Research. The Committee is looking into the functions of the 2005 Gambling Act, in order to reform it with today’s new technology considerations and possible changes to tax regime.
The National Centre for Social Research is giving details relating to the changing demographics in the gambling world commenting, "We see more women and older people becoming involved with gambling and an increase in the proportion of people who gamble regularly."
Why the fact that more women are playing various games for money is not that surprising nor is the growth in so called ‘grey’ gambling looking at the aging population and the extended use of online connections.
