ONLINE GAMBLING RING - BUSTED IN BEIJING
World Cup online betting ring arrested
The Chinese anti-gambling raids (see earlier Online-Casino.com and InfoPowa reports) continue to make life uncomfortable for Chinese bookies trying to take online bets on the World Cup in a country where gambling is a definite no-no.
The Beijing Evening Post reports that police tracked down four online football gambling rings and arrested 24 people, including a man alleged to be the general agent on the Chinese mainland for an overseas gambling group that the newspaper did not identify.
Police revealed that they had been watching the man and his subordinates for several months before pouncing, and that the gang frequently changed cars and residences. In a major raid this week the men were detained in an apartment near the Chaoyang Park, along with others at various addresses in the city. Nine computers were confiscated.
Police say online gambling the ring organised in June involved more than 17 million yuan (US$2.12 million) in bets.
