Once again opposition is being heard in the protracted legalization of online gambling in the USA’s capital district Washington D.C.. All lights were green and everyone thought that legislation permitting online gambling in the District of Columbia had gone through all the hoops but it looks like the process has been waylaid again The latest hearing was proposed by
D.C. Council member Jack Evans, who is the chairperson of the committee that’s considering a bill introduced by another D.C. Council member Tom Wells that proposes repealing the approved by a majority online gambling legislation.
There have been points of contention that seem trivial but speak volumes about the true point of view that some council members hold. An objection to the use of iGaming rather than iGambling makes it evident that council members against internet wagering are really is not saying what they truly mean when they say they are not against ‘gambling’ per say.
The issues surrounding the methodology the council used to introduce the legislation last December and the political slashing going on in regards to the District CFO Natwar Gandhi’s involvement with Intralot, a Greek lottery service provider and Gandhi’s awarding of the lottery services contract to the firm after the bidding deadline date had passed.
Council member David Catania accused CFO Gandhi of “going rogue” and called for Gandhi’s resignation, saying there was “no way I can support [Gandhi’s] future tenure.” Catania even suggested Council file a law suit against Gandhi, and if they wouldn’t do that Catania said he would file against Gandhi himself.
In the defense of the proposed legislation that even DC Inspector General Charles Willoughby has reported that “no evidence” of any illegality was found regarding the passing of the pro iGaming legislation another council member Marion Barry was rumoured to say he may sue to take the DC Lottery out of Council’s control if they blocked the iGaming D.C. plan.
Public consultations were conducted and found the vote was three to one in favour of the plan going ahead.
