RANDOM LOGIC LAY-OFFS START
US legislation cited for retrenchments, which could include Antigua and Gibraltar
The Israeli business publication Globes reported this week that software developer and 888.com subsidiary Random Logic is to dismiss 29 employees - 7 percent of the staff - from its Israel-based R&D centre.
The layoffs stem from the cessation of the company's activity in the US due to new anti-online gambling legislation.
Tel Aviv based Random-Logic, which is registered as an Israeli company, currently employs 435. Globes reports that 888 Holding is also expected to pare down its 150-person workforce in Antigua, most of whom are call center and technical support staff. It seems that most of the employees who will have to leave the company are those who worked directly with the US market.
Employees at the company's headquarters in Gibraltar will also be worried, as Globes reports that a process of downsizing has begun there too, however because of labour laws which mandate a 60-day advance notice of dismissal, the company has not yet decided the final number of employees to be laid off. 888 Holding has 350 employees in Gibraltar.
888 spokesmen told the publication that: "In light of the change in legislation in the US and the cessation of the company's activity in that country, and after reviewing current expenses, 888 is making general structural and workforce changes. Some elements of the workforce which worked directly with the US market has been integrated into international departments."
