GOING ALL-IN FOR A LIVING

Canadian pokerheads increasingly believe that they can turn pro, says new study

The Canadian province of Ontario has increasingly been in the news following its provincial government attempts to ban online gambling advertising, and this week the spotlight was on the region once again following the release of research results on poker.

CBC News reported that an alarming number of Ontarians believe poker is a viable means to make a living, according to a study released this week by the Responsible Gambling Council.

The report claims that a poll conducted by Ipsos-Reid in the spring of 2006 found that four percent of respondents in the 18 to 34 age bracket believe they could earn a living playing poker.

"As poker increases in popularity and online accessibility, growing numbers of people are playing the card game more for money and less for recreation," the RGC study found. "About one-third of adults between the ages of 18 and 34 play poker for money, and almost a quarter of those respondents say they play regularly, at least once a week."
