INTERNET ADSPEND ON THE RISE

But probably not in the U.S. online gambling sector after the UIGEA

The business news services Bloomberg and Reuters report that advertising spending will gain momentum next year, with the bulk of the increase going to the Internet.

Worldwide ad spending will rise 5.4 percent next year, ahead of its average over the past decade, the media buyer ZenithOptimedia predicted. Outlays on the Internet will rise 28.2 percent, it said, while spending in other media will rise about 3.9 percent.

The Internet's share of total ad spending will rise to 8.6 percent in 2009, it added, from 5.8 percent this year.

Another media buyer, Universal McCann, said U.S. companies would increase ad spending by 4.8 percent next year, for a total of $298.8 billion. Newspaper advertising will gain not more than 2 percent, the forecast said, while Web advertising would increase 15 percent, down from the 20 percent rise this year.

The broad forecasts did not break down into specifics like online gambling, which is likely to be adversely affected by the impact of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which has caused a number of big advertising budget public companies to exclude U.S. players, opening the way for smaller, privately owned companies to access the lucrative U.S. market.
