SCHOOL MEALS FROM BODOG
Gambling group's charity wing helps out in Antigua
Marking the first of several charitable projects to be carried out on the islands of Antigua & Barbuda, the Calvin Ayre Foundation has announced two initiatives aimed at advancing the educational opportunities of the local Antiguan youth: the construction of an eating facility at a local secondary school to house students participating in the government's meal program, and the financing of a fence around the school property, creating a safer environment for the students.
The announcement was made at a news conference called by the Finance Minister of Antigua & Barbuda, Dr. Errol Cort. School and government officials said: "Calvin Ayre had stepped forward to sponsor T.N. Kirnon's $203 000 school meals facility, as the secondary school prepares to become a part of the national program." The construction of the building will ensure that primary and junior secondary school children are afforded a safe and clean eating facility, which offers seating areas for the children to eat their food.
In addition to ensuring that the students are accorded the basic food necessities, Calvin Ayre Foundation is funding construction of a safety fence along the perimeter of the school grounds, something the school has pushed for over the course of several years. At present, the school grounds is surrounded by two extremely busy roads, one of which is lined alongside the soccer field, creating a hazardous environment for the students, who often run across the road to retrieve the ball. The other side of the school grounds faces a prison. The fence will not only secure the children's safety while they play on the school grounds, but will also keep people who do not belong on school property outside.
The sponsorship is part of billionaire Bodog owner Calvin Ayre's interest in contributing to the social development of the local Antiguan community, home to his foundation's headquarters.
"We're extremely motivated to build on the educational needs of the local Antiguan youth, and we look forward to carrying out many more projects in this area in the years to come," said Ayre.
