WHY WOULD WE HELP A POTENTIAL COMPETITOR? SCOFF MOHAWKS
Alberta Solicitor General's comments on Kahnawake advice to Alexander First Nation band dismissed
Something of a war of words broke out in Canada this week after the Solicitor General for Alberta, Fred Lindsay told reporters that his officials had become aware that the Mohawks of Kahnawake were advising the Alexander First Nation, which is currently offering to host Internet gambling web sites for a fee.
The reaction from Mohawk Internet Technologies, the successful company set up by the Mohawk First Nation in Quebec Province to handle online gambling hosting and regulation was immediate and scathing.
Chuck Barnett, an official of the company scoffed at the allegation and said it would be "moronic" for MIT, which now hosts hundreds of Internet gaming sites, to assist a competing commercial enterprise.
In Barnett's words, "Why would the Habs advise the Leafs, or the Sox advise the Yanks, on how to better organise their operation?"
Solicitor General Lindsay had earlier issued a warning to the Alexander band to "cease and desist" in its efforts to break into the online gambling business, claiming that it is illegal to set up gaming operations in Alberta without the province's approval.
Alexander band officials have so far declined to comment.
