JOSE FIGHTS FOR HOLD EM - IN TEXAS
San Antonio representative could be top of the pops with poker players
The state that gave poker's most popular game its name could be a leader in recognising its legality as a real money pastime if Jose Menendez, the representative for San Antonio has his way
The state politician has introduced a bill to legalise real-money poker in Texas bars, removing outdated law for a more enlightened and progressive approach that recognises the widespread popularity of the game.
Among some of the Menendez bill highlights: Four raked tables may be allowed in establishments that meet requirements; charity poker will become legal; dealers will have to submit to mandatory training and licensing; there will be stiff criminal penalties for dishonest operators and taxes raised on operators will go to state welfare coffers.
"Charitable poker means more Texans win," said Mike Lavigne, treasurer of the Texas Poker Association. "Texas charities are losing out on millions of dollars due to the antiquated laws governing the game, and Texas would finally be able to benefit from the rise in popularity of Texas Hold'em"
The Texas Poker Association is a pro-poker lobby group established in 2006 to seek legislation and establish rules and regulations for poker in the state.
