SUPPORT OF GERMAN MONOPOLY PLANS DENIED BY EC HEAD

German States and McCreevy could be headed for a clash

Claims that the European Union may be preparing to uphold Germany's monopoly proposal on sports betting has been denied by Charlie McCreevy, the European Union's internal market commissioner.

German newspaper, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, reports that Martin Stadelmaier told the newspaper that the state monopoly would be approved by next week, albeit with conditions.

Germany's states have proposed banning private sports betting companies until 2010, during which time they will develop a system by which private betting companies can obtain concessions.

McCreevy responded by saying that a decision on the matter had not yet been made.
