WPT CHAMPS (Update)

The field thins out....

The World Poker Tour Championship at the Bellagio in Las Vegas continued to provide great competitive poker action right up to the close of Day 1B which saw the field further thinned down from a start of 333 entries, slightly more than Day1A which boasted 306 players.

The record total of 639 players prepared to pay the $25 000 entry to go after the almost $4 million winner's prize confounded pessimists who predicted that the epic poker event would not attract as many numbers this year due to US legislative developments, and after four consecutive years of impressive growth, the field this year generated a prize-pool of $15 495 750. This means that the top 100 players will finish in the money, earning at least $46 410, and the top three will become instant millionaires.

Day 1B again produced an impressive sprinkling of poker stardust, with Doyle and Todd Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, Erick Lindgren, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, Joe Hachem, Erik Seidel, Johnny Chan, Chip Reese, Kathy Liebert, Mike Matusow, Carlos Mortensen, Patrik Antonius and JC Tran all eager to go after the big prize.

Ted Forrest was an early departure at hand number 2 after a clash with Hollis Stabler, and that was just the start of some highly entertaining, skilful and at times downright audacious play as the top guns fought for supremacy.

Sam Farha finished the day with the biggest chip pile at 210 000, with his closest rival Dan Lowe on 198 050. Also in the six figure chips were Marc Recener (175 925) Tim Phan (167 300) and Kirk Morrison (167 075) In the Day 2 section of the competition Farha will be competing against Day 1A winner Anna Wroblewski who amassed a 211 325 chip stack (see earlier Online-Casinos.com/InfoPowa report)

Day 2 will see 479 players in action on 48 tables. The final day of the Championships is April 27.
