Taiwan police arrest 9 for illegal online sportsbetting

Taiwanese press reports that 9 people in Taichung City and Puli Township have been arrested in police raids on suspected illegal online sportsbetting locations.

Police in Nantou County revealed evidence seized in the raids included computer files, counting machines, surveillance monitors and client lists. The head of Nantou County Police, Lin Yi-Min, stated that the gambling ring was the largest ever to be broken in central Taiwan with his office confiscating millions of dollars in bets.

The Taiwan enforcement agencies recently established a special task force in co-operation with the local prosecutors' office and several other government agencies to stop online gambling in the run-up to legislative and presidential elections. This unit's investigations led them to target and raid the operations.
