ONLINE GAMBLERS GET THE BOOT IN BELGIUM
Tennis match punters asked to take their laptops and leave
Two Russians and a German were ejected from the Proximus Diamond Games women's tennis tourney in Antwerp, Belgium this week on allegations that they were using a laptop to take advantage of the delay in the time it took for results to be posted on a gambling website in order to profit.
Tennis officials, hyper-sensitive after wide publicity of betting corruption in the sport which has resulted in litigation being launched against major online betting sites, quickly spotted the three offenders seated in the stands working their laptops.
Katia Stroobants, a spokesperson for the Belgian Women's Tennis Association said: "Three spectators were removed. The two Russians and one German were holding a laptop, logged on to a gambling website and were gambling on ongoing matches.
"The WTA takes a zero tolerance approach to this issue. The men were asked to leave or hand over their laptops and they decided to leave with their computers. Unfortunately, we do not have any other power to further investigate."
