NEVADA GAMING COMMISSION APPOINTS A NEW MEMBER

Former athletics commission head joins top regulator

Dr. Tony Alamo (43), former chairman of the Nevada Athletic Commission and a member of Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons' transition team, was named by the governor this week to replace Ray Rawson on the powerful state Gaming Commission. Rawson departs after three year's service to the Commission.

Alamo has been a southern Nevada physician since 1991, was on the Athletic Commission from 2001 to 2007 and is the son of Tony Alamo, formerly an executive overseeing boxing promotions for the Mandalay Bay resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

No stranger to senior management positions and authority, Dr. Alamo also served as chief of staff at Sunrise Hospital and chaired the Athletic Commission's medical advisory board. He was part of Governor Gibbons' transition team following Gibbons' successful 2006 bid for governor.

The Gaming Commission is the policy arm of the state's gambling regulatory apparatus. Together with the state Gaming Control Board, its enforcement and investigative arm, the commission acts on all gambling industry licensing and policy issues that come before the state.

Among the large gaming companies operating in the state are MGM Mirage, Harrah's Entertainment Inc., Wynn Resorts Ltd. and Las Vegas Sands Corp.
