Valencia - major European betting groups could have an alternative to Madrid
Spain's system of allowing its autonomous regions to call the shots regarding the licensing of gambling operations provided land gambling groups with opportunities in Madrid last year, an example that Valencia looks set to follow in 2008. The regional government is currently completing its investigations and decision making process on the possibilities, which could lead to a new licensing regime.
In September last year members of the opposition Popular Party in the Spanish Congress proposed legislation to regulate online gambling, too. The proposals were passed by the Spanish Congress in December and the next step would appear to be drawing up supporting regulations on a national level, although little progress will be made until this year's electoral season has been finalised.
