One of poker's characters breaks the bracelet drought

A trimmer, fitter and generally better Mike 'The Mouth' Matusow has broken a personal World Series of Poker bracelet drought by winning Event 18 - the $5 000 No Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball w/ rebuys - at the Rio in Las Vegas this week.

Playing in a final table glittering with poker star power, forty year old Matusow showed skill and discipline to take the bracelet and a main prize of $537 862 after a heads up with Jeff Lisandro, who took home $347 004 for his second placing. Lisandro had the chip lead at the start of the heads up, but Matusow came back strongly to win in the end.

The final table lineup was to say the least impressive, with Jeff Lisandro, Barry Greenstein, Erick Lindgren, Tony G, Tom Schneider and David Benyamine facing Matusow across the felt. The players were the survivors of a field of 85 entrants for the event who made almost 275 re-buys, driving the prize pool up to $1 735 020.

For Matusow it was his third WSOP bracelet, his last one achieved in 2002 when he enjoyed victory in the $5 000 Omaha Hi-Low Split 8 or Better event.

Greenstein, who had started the final table with a significant chip lead, finished third for a payout of $225 552.

Fans who hoped to watch the event on television will unfortunately have to be patient - the event will only be broadcast later this year thanks to new television scheduling agreements.
