BANNING THE BHUTANI

No computer games for politicians

Lawmakers in the newly democratic Himalayan country of Bhutan will have to forego their penchant for playing computer games, at least in the National Assembly, following a ban on laptops in the establishment this week.

Speaker of the Assembly Nima Tchering, introducing the ban said: ''The members can be distracted playing games and viewing pictures."

The decision follows a move by some politicians to allow laptops into the Assembly as a more convenient way of carrying reference information than bundles of documents.

Electronic gadgets, eating and smoking are also verboten.
