MORE ARRESTS IN SINGAPORE

22 picked up in police raids on a "funeral wake"

Channel News Asia reports that Singapore police arrested 22 people this week for illegal gambling in an apartment at Lorong 1 Toa Payoh. The gambling den was set up at the venue disguised as a funeral wake.

With the exception of two people from Malaysia and China, all those arrested were Singapore residents, the report said, adding that the police seized cash amounting to S$ 80 000.

Those arrested will be charged in court soon, and if convicted, may be fined up to S$ 5 000 or jailed for six months, or both.

The as yet unidentified operator of the illegal gambling den faces heavier penalties - a fine of between S$ 20 000 and S$ 200 000, or a five-year jail sentence, or both.
