Minnesotans Still Internet Gamble

Pat Garofalo the Republican representing Farmington Minnesota has introduced legislation that would stop the Department of Public Safety in Minnesota from making Internet service providers block access to 200 online gambling and gaming sites. Eleven Internet service providers were directed to block the specific web sites. The effort to keep Minnesotans from gambling online has caused a huge disturbance in the online world, for various political and moral reasons. The edict sent by the Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division of the Department of Public Safety has had no official response from the service providers that were told to comply.

Director of the state's Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division, John Willems when making the announcement, alerted players in Minnesota that any balances they have with online gambling sites could be in peril if access is denied. In Minnesota all online gambling within the state is illegal, eventhough of the 200 sites on the black list many are registered in the Caribbean or the United Kingdom.

Garofalo said recently, "The Department of Public Safety has to have better things to do with their time than to go after a college kid in his dorm room or some guy sitting in his basement spending a couple of hours playing online poker," adding, "Demanding that a private-sector Internet service provider block access to websites is not a proper function of our state government."

Willems was dismayed at the introduction of Garofalo's bill, saying, "It reflects a 180-degree turn from the current enforcement efforts towards illegal online gambling, particularly those that are being currently undertaken" Garofalo's legislation would not stop such an action by the state unless there is legislative approval. Garofalo said, "I'm certainly not condoning online gambling," "But I have serious concerns about government banning access to web sites." He concluded in saying, "Besides, how about we focus on balancing the state's $6.4 billion budget deficit."
