Computer gaming giant SEGA is rumoured to be moving into the online casino and gambling market. Known to most old school customers as a multinational video and game software developer and hardware producer for home computers and consoles. It's headquarters are in Tokyo Japan but the company has arms in other parts of the world as well. Sega's European division, Sega Europe Ltd., is headquartered in the Brentford area of London. U.K. and Sega's North American division, Sega of America Inc., is headquartered in San Francisco, California. Sega Australia is located in New South Wales, and it continues to maintain offices in France, Germany and Italy.
In 2001 the company left the consumer console business and began concentrating on software development for multiple third-party platforms. With revenues of approximately $1.6 million USD and as many as 3100 employees this is not a small outfit and any move into online gambling is sure to be a success.
The Megadrive, Dreamcast, and Saturn consoles that provided so much fun playing Sonic the Hedgehog are no longer made. The games however could be turned into themed slots and games based on other characters such as Dr. Robotnik and Miles "Tails" Prower.which could be turned into Virtua Fighter Poker or Dr. Robotnik Roulette.
The consoles from SEGA which sold 29 million units worldwide between 1988 and 1997, were discontinued in 2001 when other gaming consoles came on the market. Sega in it's wisdom decided it would concentrate on software and game production.
There has not been any official word on a potential online casino and poker service, but industry experts believe that the company is hoping to use the power of the SEGA brand to attract potential gamers. It is expected that SEGA is will launch their online casino offering in October of this year.
