Where is Utah? In the USA, where all things are possible and the rights of the individual are enshrined in the country's national anthem "Home of the Brave and Land of the Free". Well in a small town in Utah called Murray fifty or so people were quietly playing casino games on the internet, when the establishment they were in was raided by local police and they were arrested on the spot. Allegations were levelled against these unsuspecting folks by the Murray Police Department that they were participating in illegal online gambling activities. After several undercover operations conducted by the small town police force at the Fortune Cyber Cafe over the last few months in cooperation with the Salt Lake City District Attorney's Office revealed that many customers were indeed playing slots, poker, and keno, on the internet.
Kenny Bass, a Murray Police Detective, went on television to announce the arrests. He said" We want to keep customers out of their business and let customers realise
that if they do go to a business like this, they will be arrested for it"
The Police charged 6 employees and issued 45 other individuals with citations for their
illegal gambling activities. Surprisingly the owner of the establishment was not charged, with any offences.
The median income for a household in the city is around $45,000 and the population was around 35,000 people back in 2000. It is a part of the greater Salt Lake City area and is made up of a cross section of ages. The Police say patrons of the cafe put money on cards, then swept them through machines connected to a computer to gamble. After all this beautiful city with towering mountains and a rich history should not be worried about cyber cafes with people minding there own business doing no harm to anyone and in fact probably enjoying themselves. The police resources should be put to better use tracking down criminals that are seriously bad, not your average American playing games of chance.
