Calls to the gambler's hotline by women rise by 46 percent in 2003.

More women are calling West Virginia's Problem Gamblers Help Network lately.

Fifty-four percent of the calls made to the 24-hour hot line last year were from women.

Mia Moran-Cooper, the group's executive director, calls gambling addiction an equal opportunity disorder. She said women are just as likely as men to get hooked, yet women seem to be more open to seeking help than their male counterparts.

Overall, the number of calls to the network increased from 803 in 2003 to 1,179 last year. That's a 47 percent increase.

Studies have shown that male gamblers are drawn to action-driven gambling like sports, poker and blackjack. Moran-Cooper said women tend to prefer solitary games such as slot machines.
