Stanleybet Claims Italy Stacking the Deck in Betting Shop Tender

The idea of fairness can sometimes be a long shot for situations that consist of a stacked deck. Firms in Europe offering online betting have looked to emerging regulated markets to expand and remain competitive. Italy has a newly liberated online gambling market that allows offshore firms through licensing to offer betting services in the Italian jurisdiction.

Italy recently issued a tender for 2,000 new betting shops with four-year licenses. The reasonable price of €11k per shop license has attracted many applicants. Applicants and the technical infrastructure must be based in the European Union and hold a license for gambling games offered by Italy’s regulatory body. Stanleybet the United Kingdom based betting firm has seen red since the announcement by the Italian regulators sensing the organizers have made it difficult for offshore operators to comply. Stanleybet waged a legal battle earlier with the Italian government that made life difficult for operators to compete in the Italian market.

Stanleybet, has already filed a complaint with the European Commission over Italy’s Decree-Law 16/12 that limits access to their market via exclusion zones and favouritism of the domestic gambling market. Stanleybet claims the plan is designed to keep Italian operators in the loop. There are as many as 1,000 who benefited from exclusion zones sanctioned by the former regulator. Those licenses expired in June of 2012 yet were allowed to continue operating with temporary extensions. Stanleybet did not let regulators get away with their protectionist ways in the past and probably will follow through as before and back up their legal complaints with a team of lawyers specializing in gambling affairs. Stanleybet stayed out of the newly regulated French online betting market along with iconic betting operator Ladbrokes. In 2008 the company launched the Fair Play for Sports Betting campaign, calling for fair access to all European markets for all EU-based sports betting operators. Stanleybet is also a member of European Sports Security Association.
