Online Sports Bookies Gave 25/1 Odds on PGA Winner Rory McIlroy

Tiger Woods once again was in the spotlight with many hoping to see Woods return to his former glory and take the PGA Championship. Unfortunately this just didn’t happen as Tiger disappointed his fans with a lack luster ending to what started out as beautiful golf.

The shining light did focus however on young Rory McIlroy who last year pulled the rabbit out of the hat and is constantly being compared to the famous Tiger Woods and other great golf champions. Some were saying last year that McIlroy would surpass Tigers prowess and take home the bacon and start his assent to becoming an all time great.

Well it has come to pass as McIlroy took this year’s title with a -13 score, a record eight shots ahead of second place finisher David Lynn. Bookies weren’t paying much attention to McIlroy’s skills and were offering twenty five to one odds that he would win. Punters who saw his potential last year and backed him again cashed in with confidence. Northern Irish McIlroy basically dominated the tournament and accented it with one of the most exciting finishes in recent major championship history. McIlroy placed emphasis on steady consistent play that had little to do with pure luck and more to do with skill and confidence. At the 2012 PGA Championship books didn’t do their home work and must have been kicking themselves while watching the young athlete McIlroy put shot after shot closer to the peg.

He had a successful amateur career, topping the World Amateur Golf Ranking for one week as a 17-year-old in 2007. Later that year he turned professional and soon established himself on the European Tour. He had his first win on the European Tour in 2009, and on the PGA Tour in 2010. He represented Europe in the 2010 Ryder Cup. In 2011 at the age of 22, he became the youngest player ever to reach €10 million in career earnings on the European Tour. Where McIlroy is headed is any ones guess but at the rate he’s going he is surely a contender for some big time golf fame.
