The USA is full of things to bet on but one great horse racing event tops many wagering events on the list. The Breeders Cup horse racing weekend is underway at Santa Anita Park in California. Last year the races were held at Churchill Downs with an attendance of over 100,000 people. The last time it was held in Santa Anita Park was in 2009 with 96,496 horse racing fans in the stands. The event has a rich and long history streaming back 29 years beginning as a one day, 7-race event which has grown into a two-day, $26 million extravaganza attracting championship level horses, trainers, and owners from around the world. It has also become the unofficial culmination of the thoroughbred-racing season. Many times the Breeders’ Cup Classic ends up being the deciding factor in determining the Horse of the Year.

Punters from the U.K. and Europe aren’t as interested in the Breeders Cup Championship as they are in more localized races of importance. The Grand National or Cheltenham Gold Cup are racing events that captures the interest of those on the European side of the Atlantic manly because the fans have followed their horses from start to finish.

Experts agree that the track is a factor when entering horses from Europe. The dirt track at Santa Anita is not liked by the European contingency which prefers the Pro-Ride surface that was available in 2009 at Santa Anita.

Bookies in Europe have said that they think the European horses just are as keen to race on the dirt track and punters who usually bet on the Breeders Cup are challenged by the distance and the type of conditions the horses who make the trek all the way to California must endure. After all, this event comes close on the heels of major races in the U.K. France and Ireland. Judging how the horses will run after a long racing season and a long trip to race on unfamiliar turf becomes difficult. The Breeders Cup is still a major betting event make no mistake about it millions are won and lost.
