Unibet Develops Stand Alone Online Poker Offering

Unibet was formed in the early days of online gambling in 1997 and was granted a license to operate in the United Kingdom in1998. In 1999 the company launched gambling web sites in Swedish and English and then in 2000 it established an office in Malta and only one year later it had over two hundred thousand punters in over one hundred different countries offering its services in 12 languages.

Now Unibet Group Plc. has 7.2 million users globally and has three brands marketing its wide variety of gambling products, Unibet, Maria, and Kambi. The Netherlands, Belgium and the Nordic region are part of their primary focus. Unibet provides live betting, poker, supertoto, bingo, casino games, such as roulette and blackjack among other products.

A recent announcement that Unibet will move to a standalone poker offering in early 2014 come as a welcomed addition to the Unibet gambling experience. Estonian supplier Relax Gaming has developed the unique software for the Unibet and Maria brands. This will give Maria and Unibet total control over their poker offering separating it from the network of other operators.

Daniel Eskola, Head of Gaming at Unibet, commented, “The environment in the online poker industry has changed over the years and we have come to the insight that being part of a poker network is not sustainable for Unibet in the long term. This project has given us the possibility to start from a blank piece of paper and define everything we believe is important for a fun poker experience. In a way, our goal is to bring the fun back to poker by creating software with a clear focus on the casual player.” Eskola added, “Our relationship with Microgaming remains strong, and we are continuing to offer Quickfire games in our casino.”

Unibet has invested 1.25 million euro in Relax Gaming for a portion of the software developer’s assets.
