Australian 'Live' Online Betting App Causing a Stir

Gambling was underground for a long time in some parts of the world but in most regulated areas now the activity has become accepted to a degree. Those jurisdictions that prohibit internet betting are at least it seems, having a difficult go of it when it comes to controlling and policing wagering. The Department of Justice in America is constantly on the trail of would be wrong doers in the online gambling industry. The federal government in the States is still up in the air on the legality of online gambling but has also collected major fines for transgressions in the USA.

In Australia another issue concerning the law has sprung up with an alleged contravention of Australia’s Interactive Gambling Act 2001.  This act states in-play or ‘live’ betting is restricted to in person wagering at retail betting outlets or over the telephone. Getting around ‘restriction’ this has been a challenge for the operators who hold licenses in Australia. In order to give the consumer what they want some smart online gambling operators have resorted to creating applications for mobile devices that use voice recognition technology.

The latest betting service to offer live in play online betting is Bet365 which will now follow in the footsteps of other gambling service providers such as William Hill and Ladbrokes. These so called ingenious workarounds have become a big issue in the Australian gambling industry with investigations already underway. The Australian Communications and Media Authority’s recent investigation into the applications was handed over to the Australian Federal Police to look for criminal activity with regard to a breach of the IGA 2001.

The Bet365 app is a bit of a turnaround for the firm, which already pulled out of its online in-play betting service in 2012. The move was to show regulators it would comply as it pursued an online betting license in the Northern Territory of Down Under.
