NSW Australia Prohibits Live Online Sports Betting Adverts

Australian policy regarding gambling has been in flux for some time now and the recent announcement that there will be a prohibition on advertizing of live odds on television and radio during sporting events suggests that there is more change coming.

The New South Wales Deputy Premier Minister for gaming and racing Troy Grant announced last week that these ads will be banned as of March 2016. Mr. Grant maintains that the in-play odds offering increases dangerous gambling risk by encouraging players to chase losses or bet on an impulse. Grant commented that, “There is no doubt the sports betting market is becoming increasingly competitive as operators aggressively chase market share through promotions, so it’s important that regulation moves with the industry,”

Long term sporting events such as Test cricket and golf tournaments will be excluded from the ban although live-betting ads in sporting events that are shorter than four hours, such as NRL, AFL, cricket and football will experience the prohibition rules. New South Wales will become the first Australian state to issue a ban notice for in-play odds advertizing.

Former New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell is in the process of preparing a report on online betting in New South Wales that will extend the range of the prohibition to include alluring credits, vouchers, and other enticing offerings made by gambling operators.

The Australian Association of National Advertisers is on board with the program and has published a discussion paper to remove ads that might encourage the vulnerable sector such as children or young people to wager. Extending the ban on adverts that use the media with pictures music language or famous people to encourage youth to bet is the proposed plan. Gambling ads with a guaranteed win are also prohibited as well as those depicting drinking, sex or bettors younger than twenty five associated with gambling.

Chief executive officer, Sunita Gloster at the AANA commented that the proposal would provide protection for the consumers and a regulatory framework for online gambling operators regarding the marketing and advertising of their betting products and services.
