E-Sports Online Betting Professional Grade Debate

The latest opportunity for betting being presented on the internet is e-Sports but it has been under scrutiny by organizations around the world regarding its legality and integrity. The Korea e-Sports Association is a body established to manage e-sports in South Korea which is a jurisdiction where the trend has made some real progress. Director Cho Man Soo of the organization issued a statement saying it would continue its “zero-compromise” stance on illegal betting. He called integrity “the most important challenge’ facing the rapidly growing eSports industry.

In 2015 there were a number of match fixing instances regarding eSports that became an issue for the organizations supporting the activity as well as those who gamble on the games. It has been noted that the development of eSports betting is similar to the growth of online poker in so much that during the early days of online poker there wasn’t very much oversight or controls.

Not only does eSports have problems with integrity but it is even being questioned as to whether or not the activity is really a sport. A recent study by researchers at the German Sports University found that many eSports players are not fit to face the physical demands of playing in professional eSport tournaments. There is a heated debate among academics about whether professional electronic gamers should be considered athletes at all.

The last five years has produced a lot of data regarding eSports players at the German Sports University. Professor Ingo Frobose has revealed that professional video game players are exposed to a level of strain that was not present in other sports. The professor found that players use their hands at a rate four times higher than an average computer user. Frobose commented, “The whole thing is asymmetrical, because both hands are being moved at the same time and various parts of the brain are also being used at the same time,” Frobose continued, “This is combined with a high pulse, sometimes as high as 160 to 180 beats per minute, which is equivalent to what happened during a very fast run, almost a marathon,”
