The Terrestrial VS Online Gambling Expansion

The expansion of online gambling has a number of land based casino owners and politicians concerned. The basic reason for concern among the politicians is jobs, votes and taxes. From the land based casino owners who have invested in bricks and mortar it is less profit and competition. In the USA and Canada there is also some concern from the tribal communities who also use casinos and poker rooms as a revenue source. There are thousands of casinos on the internet and it is estimated that they generate US$7 billion per year. The industry is showing no signs of slowing either so that number will likely continue to grow unless some laws disable the expansion.

The payout odds at privatized land-based operations such as those in Las Vegas, Macau, Monte Carlo, and Singapore are lower than those offered by online casinos from the Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Malta, Curaçao, and the Philippines. Government run terrestrial casinos offer even worse payout percentages.

Making the trek to a land based casino in some parts of the world is an experience in itself but the excitement of the land based casino atmosphere with the overwhelming colours lights and sounds can make it worth it. Gambling is part of many tourist offerings so the tourism industry and all that it entails also benefits from the terrestrial casino gambling venue.

Technology is making the online gambling experience a closer one to the visceral betting experience especially with online sports betting where big screen television and surround sound and smart phones can get a punter close to the game and instant wagering. Online gambling does have a number of real time advantages that land based casinos don’t have. There is a greater risk of over indulgence while playing games online for real money responsible gambling is encouraged by every wagering enterprise.
