Playtech Sees Potential In Portugal's Online Gambling Market

The online gambling scene is changing rapidly in Europe with shared liquidity and the liberalization of more jurisdictions in the Union. Last July the regulators of online gambling in Spain France Italy and Portugal agreed to sharing poker liquidity. The poker players and operators are happy with the agreement which will stimulate growth in the sector.

The Portuguese Gambling Regulatory Authority (SRIJ) said in a statement published by G3 Newswire, “Through this system, it is now possible for poker games to benefit from shared liquidity,” “For players and operators, this enables all the control and reporting guarantees required for a secure and responsible gambling experience.

“Once in force all licensed online poker operators can also offer tables and tournaments involving players from the countries that signed the agreement for shared online poker liquidity (Portugal, Spain, France and Italy), as long as those operators comply with the requirements defined by each one of these countries.”

The recent announcement that Playtech has secured the contract to power Portugal’s leading online operator, Sociedade de Apostas Sociais (SAS) is an example of Portugal’s changing approach to online betting. Other betting opportunities are always presented along with poker and the Playtech powered SAS sports book will be one of them shortly.

SAS is one of the first to launch  a wider range of online products and services after the Portugal regulated its online gambling industry a year and a half ago. Playtech BGT Sports (PBS) chief operating officer Shimon Akad, said, “New and emerging regulated markets are a key part of our growth strategy. Portugal is a significant territory in that growth plan, therefore we are delighted to have agreed terms with SAS and to be integrating two core elements of the Playtech offering beginning with IMS and sports book.” Akad added, “This market has great potential and we’re excited to be at the forefront of gaming innovation and growth in Portugal.”
