Casino Lux Review

Sorry, No US Players Accepted @ Casino Lux
Casino Lux:

Casino Lux first opened its virtual doors in 1997, which makes it one of the oldest online casinos around. Similarly, the home page of the site claims to have handled over $1.7 Billion in transactions which, if accurate, is a huge testament to the casino's popularity. Operating using the latest software from Grand Virtual, I decided to see what was on offer to the player looking for something different to the many other casinos operating in cyberspace.

One of the first questions a long-time player may ask about Casino Lux is why is the software manufacturer relatively unknown when compared to competitors such as Microgaming and Playtech. The answer to this lies in the fact that Grand Virtual casinos do not allow players from the United States to play for real money. As a result Casino Lux, as with other casinos using this software, have set themselves up focusing predominantly on the European and Asian markets. As such, the software manufacturer simply isn't as well-known as some others. Having said that, I know this software well myself and actually played at Casino Lux when I very first started gambling online around 6 years ago!

The only way to play at Casino Lux is to download their software (no CD is available), although thankfully this proved to be relatively quick. The initial download is actually an installer which then requests further files from the internet. A nice move is that the software is available in a variety of languages covering much of Europe as well as Chinese. One thing players should note though, is that games are not downloaded until a player 'forces' them to download - upon clicking a game a player must wait approximately two minutes for that game to download. Nevertheless, on the plus side it means you only download what you want to play, so if you don't play slots for example, you'll never have them download (and using up valuable bandwidth).

As stated earlier, I actually used to play at Casino Lux when I very first started gambling online. In fact, I remember having some decent wins and cashing out a good few hundred dollars on more than one occasion. As such, when I loaded the casino after re-downloading I thought I would be able to log in using my old username and password. However, whilst I had remembered these details I was informed by the software that my account had been closed due to inactivity!

As readers of Online-Casinos.com know I usually review a casino's support offering at the end of a playing session. However, as I had genuine cause this time to contact support (to ask them to reactivate my account), I headed straight to the support pages of the casino website. Unfortunately, I discovered that support is only offered via email / web form. No telephone facility is available nor any live-chat function. I think this is definitely an area that should be improved by Lux, particularly when comparing this casino to other competitor sites; many of which offer numerous ways for a player to receive help. Having said that, I did receive an instant automated response to my question and a follow-up 'real person' email within 3 hours. A further 24 hours was then required for the appropriate department to action my request. Incidentally, support is available in 16 languages, again a great draw for non-English speaking players.

Once I had logged in to the casino having had my account reactivated, the first thing I needed to do was make a deposit. A good selection of purchase options are available, with many having low minimum deposit requirements of just $5. This is great for the low stakes gambler. I personally opted to make a $50 NETeller deposit which was processed without hassle. As I was an old player at Casino Lux, I was not entitled to any deposit bonus on this occasion. However, this casino operates a fantastic sign-up bonus where for just a $5 minimum purchase, the casino will add a $30 'no strings attached' bonus to the account. This is a fantastic offer and will definitely appeal to players who want to test the casino with real money but without risking too much themselves.

The first game I checked out is my favorite - Blackjack. Lux offers a variety of games available through the casino lobby including a number of Blackjack variants. Of great appeal to low-stakes players will be the Micro Blackjack with a minimum bet of just $0.10. However, I opted for the classic game allowing bets on three spots of between $2 and $150. I have to say the game was actually more than fair to me, with a few BJ's coming when they were needed. Game play itself was fun, although slightly slow for my liking. Nevertheless, this casino favorite has been well reproduced at Casino Lux, and enabled me to grow my bankroll to just over $70.

After leaving Blackjack I moved on to examine some of the other card games available. Games such as Stud Poker and Baccarat are all here, plus some harder-to-find games such as Pai Gow Poker. However, other more obscure games (such as Let it Ride and Three-card Poker) were not available. Despite this fact, the games that are available have been well designed and did not seem to have the 'invincible dealer' I have met at other online casinos!

I was just about to leave the card games and move on to a different area of the casino when the symbol for Solitaire caught my eye (Solitaire being the game that accompanies most versions of Windows). I had never seen this before at an online casino so I decided to give it a go. The game plays just like you would expect, except a player has a chance to win real money! A bet is made to start the game, with a set amount being paid back to the player for each card 'cleared'. Complete the game and the player wins a very nice amount. Unfortunately I appeared to be terrible at Solitaire and came out a good few dollars down, but nice to see this game nonetheless!

I had a look at some of the other table games available (Roulette, Sic-Bo, Craps etc.), but decided I wanted to head over to my second favorite game - Video Poker. I have to say this is an area of the casino that Casino Lux has most definitely improved since I last played. Now a plethora of games are available from classics such as Deuces Wild and Jacks or Better to cool modern varieties such as Bonus Flush poker. Even cooler is the fact that each game can be played over a number of hands from 1 all the way up to 500! I haven't seen this many multi-hand games anywhere else online, and with the graphics and sound effects being perfectly acceptable I could see Casino Lux becoming a Video Poker player's dream!

I played a variety of games and actually did pretty good on some of the multi-hand games. Thankfully, I kept hitting winning hands on the initial deal which guaranteed I was going to get my money back and hopefully a profit too. Of course, these games can also be huge drains on a bank balance though and it's very easy to get caught up in the volatility of the game if you are not careful!

The other major section of the Casino Lux casino is the slot selection. Again, this is a section that has definitely improved since my last visit here. A good selection of slots are available, including a number of single-line games and multi-line three-reel slots. There are also a number of video games available with bonus features. My only criticism with the three-reel games is that they are pretty much identical (both the one-liners and five-liners). Basically, the games are simply reproductions of each other with slightly different pay tables and winning symbols.

For more variety, the video slots are likely to be more appealing. A decent selection is available, and a varied number of bet sizes can be played. The bonus rounds available will be familiar to regular slot players with a variety of free-spin features, 'pick a win' features and the like. I had good fun on the Atlantis slot, where I activated the racing seahorse feature. In this bonus game a player selects 3 out of 6 seahorses and receives a pay off for each winner they select! Unfortunately two of my creatures didn't place, but my third pick proved to be a champion when it came in first! Similar luck was had on the Go For Gold slot where a free-spin bonus round awarded me a nice $84.90 prize.

When it comes to the graphics and sound effects of the slots I played I would rate them as 'good'. I would say that some competitor sites perhaps have better graphics, but generally I was pretty happy. The only thing that slightly annoyed me was that Casino Lux seems to have worked slightly too hard to make their games different to the competitors. For example, for every video slot I played the symbols didn't just spin in but randomly dropped in along with graphical flashes over the screen. Whilst different, I actually would have preferred a slightly less busy game. Having said that, the slots in general are fun for a while, and with progressive jackpots totaling over $14m at the time of playing, I can definitely see Casino Lux making a few people very happy!

At the end of my playing session I actually found myself with a very nice profit of just over $200. Thankfully, cashing-in at Casino Lux is really simple - a player simply has to re-visit the cashier to make the withdrawal request. A great touch is that there is no reversal period at Lux, which is wonderful for people like me who get itchy fingers! In fact, withdrawals are processed every 24 hours at Casino Lux; meaning withdrawals can be processed within as little as 12 hours if a withdrawal is timed right. There are no email confirmations of withdrawals at Casino Lux, but a history function lets a player see any transactions made along with the current status. I had my withdrawal processed to my NETeller account within around 14 hours of cashing-in.

As I have commented on support already, I will conclude this review by stating I was actually quite impressed with Casino Lux. The casino has definitely come a long way when I compare it to the Casino Lux I used to play at. A good selection of games is available, including some hard-to-find games such as Solitaire. A good range of betting limits are offered and games are generally presented utilizing nice graphics and sound effects. I think it is fair to say this casino is not as fancy as, say, a Microgaming powered casino - but for those looking for a change Casino Lux could do the trick. The cashier works excellently, but the support offerings are a slight disappointment. Nevertheless, for non-US players Casino Lux is definitely worth a look if only to play with the $30 sign-up gift.

Casino Lux Strong Points:
  • Good number of games with some hard-to-find games such as Solitaire available
  • Excellent banking facility with withdrawals processed efficiently every business day
  • Betting limits will appeal to both low-rollers and the reasonably large bettor
  • Excellent sign-up incentive - $30 free to every player for just a $5 deposit
Things Casino Lux Could Improve:
  • Customer support offering is not great with only email contact possible
  • Some of the games are a little 'too busy' - video slots such as Atlantis have too much going on for my liking
  • Although not a criticism, it should be noted that only non-US players can bet for real at Casino Lux
