Having recently done a review of Gnuf Poker and been pretty impressed with what I had seen, I decided to extend my research and have a look over at Gnuf's casino offering. As with the poker room, Gnuf utilises the highly-regarded software from Microgaming to power their online casino. This software is popular amongst the online playing community and since Microgaming only allows top quality organisations to use their software, I was intrigued to see if Gnuf could live up to everything I expected of it.

As with a number of online casinos, Gnuf offers players the choice of playing via their internet browser or via a download interface. The flash no-download version of the software is superb and in recent months and seen a massive increase in the number of games it offers. However, I personally skill like to opt for download versions of casinos. These tend to offer the very best in terms of game selection and presentation quality. As such, it is this version of the software that I'll be reviewing.

Since I had already played at Gnuf Poker I actually had the casino software installed on my computer - it seems that with Gnuf if you attempt to download either the poker or casino software you actually end up with both the casino and poker room installed on your computer. I personally think this is a little cheeky since if I want both I can download both! Having said that, both the casino and poker room can be removed independently so it's not a real problem. For those completely new to Gnuf the installation file weighs in at just under 400k. This is very small although during the installation process more files are requested from the internet.

Account creation at Gnuf is also straight forward. In fact, accounts created at Gnuf can be used interchangeably between the casino and the poker room. As such, I was able to use my poker username and password to enter the casino. Similarly, I assume that any players creating their account for casino play will probably also find they can access the poker room. Because of this integrated approach a player has to create an account within a web browser window as opposed to within the software (as with the majority of Microgaming-powered casinos). However, this isn't a particular hassle and the casino collects exactly the same personal information as any other. A great touch at Gnuf is that a decent selection of playing currencies are available. 'Standards' such as US Dollar, Canadian Dollar, Euro and UK Pound are offered but so too are the currencies of Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Clearly the Gnuf management team are trying to gain a following within the Scandinavian countries.

Gnuf does offer players the chance to indulge in some free-play entertainment. However, this doesn't provide the opportunity to win real money and so I dived straight in to money play. Firstly though I had to visit the cashier where I was able to purchase $100 via NeTeller without hassle. Gnuf allows players to deposit using a pretty standard set of methods - credit card, NeTeller, Click2Pay, PaySafe Card and Moneybookers are all offered as deposit options. To entice players to make their first casino deposit a sign-up bonus offer is available. The offer isn't the biggest available on the web, but the 100% match (up to $50) will probably still appeal to some players. I certainly can see the advantage of testing a casino out when there's 'free' money to be had. Although having said that I decided to not take up the offer as I didn't want any early big wins to be ground down thanks to bonus wagering requirements! And so, with my $100 balance it was now time to hit the games.

Players that are used to playing at Microgaming-powered casinos will quickly get used to the Gnuf setup and lobby layout. The huge selection of games (200+) are broken down by category (e.g. table games, video poker) and as such finding specific games is relatively easy. The software also remembers a player's previous gaming sessions and as such places what it thinks are a player's favourite games in a specific 'favourites' category. This is a nice touch and shows that the designers have thought closely about what features may be of interest to customers.

To begin my session I decided to partake in some table game action. I enjoy table game play as generally the odds are not massively in favour of the house and generally a player can experience winning play fairly regularly. Specifically I decided to start with some Three Card Action which offers players the chance to win some decent size amounts thanks to the pair+ play option.

For those unfamiliar to Three Card Poker, a person is allowed to place two different bet types. The first is a classic ante / raise type bet with the aim of the game to be dealt a three-card hand that is better in rank than the dealer's. There's also a 'pair plus' bet that pays of handsomely for certain winning hands (straight, flush etc.) The great thing with this bet is that the dealer doesn't have to qualify to get paid off!

Upon entering this game I was immediately struck by the game's quality presentation. Anybody visiting the Gnuf website will soon realise the owners have gone for a sleek, elegant look in terms of graphics and this certainly extends throughout Gnuf's games. Graphics are 'clean' and of very high quality. Clearly this casino has tried hard to move away from the flashing graphics and annoying sound effects found in some other casinos. Similarly, game play itself is very smooth and with many game options being user configurable (e.g. sound effects, game speed), a player really can set the casino up to play exactly as they like best.

Unfortunately although the game looked nice it didn't play very nice for me! I had a few decent starting hands but after that really couldn't see any big wins coming and so I decided to move on to some Blackjack play. Gnuf offer a great selection of BJ games again showing the casino's desire to offer a player exactly what they want. Whether it's Vegas Strip rules or a clone of the Atlantic City game you want, you'll find it at Gnuf. Table limits at Gnuf are generally between $1 and $200, although some 'high roller' tables allow bets of up to $1000 and as such the vast majority of players should be happy with Gnuf's betting limits.

Having checked out the table games and not really won anything I next decided to try my luck on Gnuf's Video Poker machines. Video Poker players will love the selection of gmaes available at Gnuf with around 15+ different variations of the game available. The games also come in multi-hand formats with players able to play across 4, 10, 25, 50 or even 100 hands. These big multi-hand games are crazy in terms of their volatility but can certainly be rewarding when decent hands are dealt at the start of the game. For example, I was dealt 3 kings whilst playing 10-hands Jacks or Better and so knew straight away I was going to win at least 3 times mo total bet back on that hand!

Of course, the same great graphics and sound effects are also found within Gnuf's Video Poker games and I was truly impressed with the speed of the games. I have found with other sites, particularly when playing multi-hand games, that it can be tedious waiting for a server to send results back to a player's computer. This is certainly not the case with Gnuf, however, and indeed players may actually want to configure the game to play slower than the default setting!

Annoyingly though, and despite my successful start on the Jacks or Better game again I found my bank balance heading in the wrong direction. As such, I decided to see if I could make my fortunes playing on Gnuf's slots.

Slot game selection is a big draw at Gnuf with at least 150 different games available. Although some of these are 'clones' of other games available, a great selection is still available offering players the chance to bet on anything from classic-style three-reel machines to multi-line video slots with massive jackpots. At the time of playing the reasonably-new Mega Moolah progressive game had a top jackpot standing at over $4m! If this isn't enough to get a player itching to try their luck I don't know what will!

As well as playing this fun game I also tried some of the UK-style AWP games. These slots will be familiar to a UK market and are similar to the games found in pubs across the UK. They can be very confusing at first and unlike traditional slots which are truly random, these games tend to build up a bank of money which then enables them to go on winning streaks. I specifically played the Cash 'n' Curry game and was lucky enough to catch the game in a happy mood - a few 20x and 30x winning spins kept me playing a little longer.

Sadly though a return visit to the Mega Moolah game and also some unlucky spinning on the cool Thunder Struck game soon saw my balance at zero. The slot games at Gnuf were definitely fun though and the games with bonus rounds particularly caught my interest. With more and more games offering bonus games and the decent wins associated with them I can see the attraction of slots such as those available at Gnuf. The use of themes such as 'Hitman' and 'The Osbournes' will probably also see slots creating an even bigger interested audience. As I say though, on this time it wasn't to be my lucky day.

And so with my balance at zero I had to leave the casino without making a cash-in. However, as with the majority of Microgaming-powered casinos, Gnuf process withdrawals quickly and efficiently. Generally all withdrawals are processed within 2 business days which is definitely an acceptable payout speed.

The support offering at Gnuf Casino is also pretty decent. Firstly it's worth pointing out that support is available in a number of languages which is definitely a good thing for those that don't have English as a first language. The support team is contactable vie email or a web form on the main page with responses usually sent within an hour. This is certainly quick for email support although this is almost a requirement of Gnuf from a player point of view. This is because Gnuf do not offer 'live' support (e.g. telephone or live chat). I think this is an area for improvement but as long as the casino continue to respond quickly to emails then players should still feel confident they can get help quickly if they need it.

In conclusion I was pretty impressed with Gnuf Casino. The casino has a great selection of games and the clean presentation certainly appealed to me. I also liked the fact that many in-game features are user-configurable allowing a player to set the casino up exactly as they wish. Financial transactions are processed efficiently and quickly at Gnuf and a good customer support function means player problems can be quickly addressed. I think live chat or telephone support would be a good addition at this casino but generally people can play at Gnuf knowing they'll have a fun time and no problems in getting their money if they win. With $50 free on sign-up perhaps it's time you tried to hit that Mega Moolah jackpot?!
