In the online casino world many sites run using software provided by just two or three major suppliers. This means that generally although there are hundreds of reputable sites to choose from, in essence the same limited number of games are available to play no matter which site you choose. However, Superior Casino uses software operating on the less well known Rival platform. And yet since launching their wares around 2 years ago this casino software manufacturer has gone from strength to strength and is actually proving to be one of the most innovative when it comes to new game creation. As such, upon learning that Superior was operating using this software I couldn't wait to take it for a test drive.
At the time of playing one of the major announcements coming out of the Rival camp was the fact that they've just launched a no-download version of their casino. As such, this means that Superior is now playable via both a download and no-download interface. Having checked out this new no-download offering I was impressed to see most of the slot games had been recreated for browser play. However, many of the card games have still not yet been converted and so I plumped for the download version as the one I was going to check out. Besides, this has the added benefit of meaning there's no hanging around when I want to play in the future – the casino fires up immediately when I want it.
Download and installation is a straight-forward affair with the 520k installer downloading within seconds on my high-speed line. The remaining files required for operation were then downloaded but all in all this procedure only took a minute or so. One of the great things with Superior is that only a minimal number of games are downloaded at outset - further games can then be forced to install by user intervention. As such, players on lower-speed connections don't needs to be hanging around unnecessarily – once the lobby is loaded they decide which games are worth waiting for.
The Superior Casino lobby is quite a grand affair with a regal-looking staircase being used as the backdrop. Similarly, the use of classical music to welcome to the player immediately made me think that perhaps this casino is a cut above the average. I have to say, I get fed up with the American-style casinos full of bells, whistles and bright lights so to see one that's gone for a refrained, elegant look is a definite plus! Both play for real and play for fun options are available to the player and one account is needed to access both.
Speaking of creating new accounts, this is the first thing I had to do since I was a brand new member here. A standard form is used to capture a new player's details and they are allowed to create an account denominated in US Dollars, UK Pounds, Euros and South African Rand. Since this casino is open to US gamblers I decided to make a US$ account although this multi-currency approach shows that Superior has recognised the global appeal of online gambling.
After creating my new 'onlinecasinos' account I then headed to the cashier. One of the things that immediately struck me was that this is a personalised cashier – promotions available to every individual player are displayed on the right and a handy screen details the wagering requirements of each. This approach is great and means a player simply needs to opt in to a bonus before depositing. I don't usually go for bonuses but since Superior offer a $20 no-deposit chip I couldn't really resist and so after a few clicks I was armed with $20 to play with! Incidentally, the range of bonuses at Superior is massive. Since joining I've had no less than 4 free chips awarded and even though I've now made multiple deposits and am well past joining-bonus stage, my cashier is still displaying a selection of 13 bonuses to choose from. Some of these do have heavy wagering requirements but if you are low on funds and what extended play time Superior is definitely worth looking in to.
Anyway – since I was now armed with me $20 freebie I headed for the slot selection; after all this chip is intended to get a players on the slot games. However, this is not a bad move since Rival is well-known for designing excellent slots. Indeed, they were the first company to design 'story-based' games (identified in the lobby as I-slots). These ingenious inventions actually offer a story line as a player bets. When certain combinations of symbols are hit the story continues and the player even has the opportunity to influence the way the story plays out. These are a great play and if you've never tried them before should certainly be something you check out.
The range of other 'mechanical style' and video slots are also great fun. One of my favourite all time games, 5 Reel Circus, is playable at Superior and it was here that began my play. I've found with this game that the scatters seem to hit all the time and since they trigger free spin rounds it means this slot can pay nicely. Indeed, my lucky streak on this game continued from the off and within around 5 spins I triggered the free spin round. I re-triggered two times during this bonus and so my $0.75 returned just under $50 – a great way to get started!
The other video slots are similarly great fun – with wild symbols (including expanding wilds which fill the reel), bonus rounds, 'pick me' type bonuses and many more the Superior slots should satisfy many players that try them out. The range is growing nicely too with a few progressive games recently having been thrown in to the mix. The mechanical-style slots are slightly less impressive, but the very nature of this type of game means the bonus rounds and other things I like are not going to be found. Nevertheless, the same great mix of graphics and sounds really makes game play come alive. Superior definitely gets a thumbs-up from me in this department and although I ended up crashing out with my free $20, the screenshots show the thrills I experienced without having to spend a single penny.
Of course, I couldn't leave it here so I went back to the cashier to make my first deposit. Deciding I would be playing less volatile games for the remainder of the review I decided not to accept a deposit thus meaning any wins I hit could be cashed out immediately. A reasonable range of deposit options is available including credit card and a number of e-wallets. Although I have seen a great selection of deposit options elsewhere, I still think it should be possible for most players to find a way to get money in to their account. The $25 minimum deposit is also low enough to satisfy the needs of even the tightest of gamblers. I deposited $75 and decided to see where my luck would take me.
The table game selection at Superior is another plus point with popular games such as Blackjack, Roulette, Baccarat sitting side-by-side to harder-to-find games such as Three Card Poker, Pai Gow and others. Again this range should satisfy most people and with game play offering a similar high-level combination of graphics, sound effects and smooth operation the resulting effect is certainly enjoyable. My only criticism is that betting limits are generally quite low at Superior –single-hand Blackjack allows wagers of between $1 and $100 whereas the multi-hand game has an upper limit of $50. Although low-rollers will be happy, those looking for big betting tables will be disappointed. Superior definitely seems to be aiming more to the low-mid roller market.
The same low-levels are in operation amongst the Video Poker games – a maximum $5 stake (5 x $1 coins) is the best I could find. However, those that are fans of Video Poker might generally find the Superior offering a little lack-lustre. An average selection of one-hand games is available with the odd multi-hand variety thrown in here and there. Generally though the selection is pretty limited and whilst it does offer players a break from the other games, those that are looking for a mass of VP games will be disappointed. Similarly, although the graphics and generally game play is still good, I generally felt these games had been slightly over-engineered. The cards spring out, for example and flash around the screen. Whilst this works well in slot games, it is maybe a little too much for Video Poker. Of course, this is just my observation and it didn't stop me hitting a few good wins along the way.
In fact, after all my play I had just over $200 sitting there so after playing off the odds and ends I made a withdrawal at the cashier. Impressively this moved out of pending within around 24 hours and even though I had to send in documentation, this didn't really slow down my payout and I received the funds I had won within about 72 hours from cash-out. The only criticism is that I had to deposit first via an e-wallet to allow funds to then go back to that e-wallet. This is not a major hassle but something to be aware of.
During the documentation verification procedure I made contact with support and was pleased to see my emails were responded to within around 3-4 hours of sending. Live chat and toll-free telephone support is also offered, although the latter is limited to a few countries. Nevertheless, the support offering is good and it's always good to know that there is help available if things go wrong.
In summary I was impressed with the Superior offering. The software is great and although it's a little lacking in game choice here and there, this is more than made up for by the great games that are on offer. The slots in particularly are a real draw. Depositing and withdrawing is straight forward and with 24 hour support available it's nice to know you are being looked after. High rollers may be slightly disappointed in the betting ranges but for those on a low budget the plethora of bonus coupons available means more play for your dollar. With withdrawals processed quickly if you win there really isn't much to fault with Superior Casino. Give it a go with their free $20 – maybe it'll become your new favourite!
