'Skins' Online Betting In Legal Trouble In Washington State
The world of online gambling is vast and varied with experts determining whether it is real money betting or just entertainment. Real money online wagering is controlled by rules and regulatory bodies which tax and give operators the opportunity to make a profit as long as there is no harm done to the vulnerable segment of the population. A Native American tribe that operates a casino in the state of Washington, The Quinault Nation, has filed a lawsuit against Valve Software claiming the firm is facilitating and encouraging illegal online gambling utilizing skins betting connected to online games such as Counter Strike: Global Offensive. The lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court for the state of Washington USA. The software company Valve has been accused by the Quinault Nation, which operates the Quinault Beach Resort & Casino in Ocean Shores, Washington of encouraging an environment in which illegal gambling. The lawsuit claims “Valve is well aware of the skins gambling that goes on, is well aware that skins have real world cash value…and actively encourages and facilitates skins gambling”. The legal issue revolves around Valves controversial use of so-called “loot crates”. Regulators have been dealing with the legality of ‘skins’ betting all over the world and Valve has been in the spotlight before this particular legal challenge. The suit alleges that Valve is engaging in unfair competition with licensed and regulated casinos in the State of Washington. Valve has run into the issue before when in 2016, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Connecticut resident who accused Valve of knowingly allowing illegal gambling sites to operate. Valve did attempt to stop the spread of skins betting sites with cease and desist letters although this did little to stem the trend. The Quinault lawsuit has alleged, “Valve has profited handsomely for years from illegal online gambling, and has made only token efforts to stop it,”
