Vox Populi or Super Bowl 2023 Performers People Want to See

While the Super Bowl is ostensibly one of the most significant sports events of the year, let’s be real – a lot of people are tuning in to see the spectacle that is the half-time show. The extravaganza that is the half-time show has come a long way from 1967 when the first act to play was The University of Arizona Symphonic Marching Band.

As you may have already heard, Rihanna is set to headline the halftime show of the 57th Super Bowl. As this is her return to performing after a lengthy hiatus, during which the star has focused on family and running her cosmetics empire, people are understandably very excited.

Before the announcement, we polled average Americans to find out who they most wanted to see taking to the stage at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona. While some of our survey answers might be disappointed with the recent announcement, we feel their answers might surprise you.

Performers That Fans Want to See in the State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona

Our survey polled hundreds of Americans in a bid to learn which act, people most want to see at the 57th Super Bowl in 2023. Topping the poll was Metallica, no doubt largely due to their inclusion on the season 4 Stranger Things soundtrack.

Metallica was the act that men and women most agreed on in our poll, with 41.6% of women and 58.4% of men wanting to see the band perform. Other options, however, seemed to divide the sexes. For example, when asked if Garth Brooks should headline the show, a whopping 70.5% of women said yes, compared to just 29.5% of men.

Similarly, when pitched the idea of AC/DC taking to the stage, 62% of men favoured it, whereas just 38% of women wanted to see the Aussie rockers as headliners. While Metallica topped the poll, there was slightly more interest for Drake as a headliner specifically, who received a 38.5% vote from women and 61.5% from men.

Performers Who Should Never Play the Super Bowl Again

While there have been many incredible half-time performances over the years, some missed the mark so badly that people would rather the artists involved never return to the stage. The 2004 Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake performance, and its show-stopping wardrobe malfunction, is often cited as a low point.

Beyond this, Americans polled by YouGov America also snubbed Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi’s 2019 performances. That year was, as some might remember, plagued with controversy. Many artists that year turned down the opportunity to perform as an act of solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.

Where to Watch the Super Bowl

A whopping 80% of respondents to our poll stated their interest in catching the half-time show, and only one question remains – how will you watch the Super Bowl this year? 66.54% of our group polled said that they intend to watch the event live as it happens.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the popularity and availability of streaming platforms, 28% of respondents said they will opt to watch the Super Bowl later on streaming – either for the first time, or having already watched it live.

The Most Viewed Half-Time Acts

Time will tell if Rihanna’s performance ranks among the most popular acts to take to the stage. Here are the most-viewed halftime shows on YouTube:

  1. Jennifer Lopez & Shakira (2020) – 221 Million Views
  2. Lady Gaga (2017) – 137 Million Views
  3. Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige & Snoop Dogg (2022) – 103 Million Views
  4. Coldplay (2016) – 85 Million Views
  5. Katy Perry (2015) – 62 Million Views

Further Findings

In another poll, where we questioned 3,000 Americans, we found that 49% of responders feel the Superbowl should take place on a Saturday. As many have to work the following day, 31% reported that they are considering taking a sick day after the event.

28% of male respondents said they’d consider proposing during the Superbowl. But don’t get that ring out yet, fellas, as 42% of women said they would be less than impressed if their partner popped the question during the Superbowl.

Our Final Thoughts

If there’s one thing we can glean from this survey and the responses to past Super Bowl half-time shows, it’s that you never can tell what people are going to respond well to. Had you suggested Metallica as a headliner a year ago, you likely wouldn’t have been taken seriously?

That’s not to say that today’s pop fixtures will be left in the lurch, though. Despite the somewhat surprising findings of our survey, contemporary pop icons like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande still scored highly with the public, though not high enough to top the polls.

Our Methodology

Of the 601 people polled, 517 expressed interest in answering the question “Who Should Headline the Super Bowl 2023 Half-time Show?”. The percentages cited in this article indicate the answers of those who expressed interest in the question and available options and omit any responders unwilling to engage with the survey. In order to get the answers to the questions stated within the Further Findings paragraph we additionally polled 3000 Americans.
