After four years at the helm and a real go round spearheading the quick growth of the Maltese internet gaming industry, Mario Galea called it quits back in October 2008. Finally after five months of searching for the right person to head up the Lotteries and Gaming Authority of Malta a new Chief Executive Officer has been found.
In July 2008 the Lotteries and Gaming Authority of Malta appointed a new Board of Directors under the chairmanship of Nicholas Xuereb, though nowhere publicly was the change directly linked to Galea's resignation.

Michael Gonzi, who is the Secretary of the Board was appointed the Acting CEO.

On March 17, 2009 the Lotteries and Gaming Authority of Malta announced that Reuben Portanier is their new CEO. With a degree in economics from the university of Malta and experience in management, Mr. Portanier is a good choice for the job. He has been a consultant for the Maltese Government's change management agency and an international audit and advisory firm. He has also worked as group CEO of Datatrak and Chief Information Officer of Malta Information Technology and Training Services. The Government of Bermuda had Portanier back in 2004 assist in developing it's information capacity exercise for the electronic Government Strategic Planning Project. He has been Malta's representative on the International Council for Information Technology in Public Administration and in 2006 he co-authored the Government's Industry Strategy for Malta 2007-2010. As a member of the National Information Society Advisory Council and chairman of the Maltese Government's CIO Council Mr. Portanier is extremely well positioned to take on his new responsibilities.

Chairman of the Lotteries and Gaming Authority of Malta Nick Xuereb, stated: "After a period of building the Authority's framework and operations, the LGA is now moving into its next evolutionary phase, where we are in the process of consolidating our legislative framework, streamlining our practices, and broadening our outlook to continue being at the forefront of industry developments.
